Education

Education programs at Independence Center are one more component in enabling members to achieve their employment goals. In fact, returning to school or finishing a degree is another top desire of adults with mental illnesses, especially those who are younger and newly diagnosed. Education staff meet with members to identify education goals and needs, working one-on-one to create individualized plans or providing assistance where needed. Members can be students, but they are also encouraged to become peer tutors. Education services include:
- Maintaining a classroom with books, instructional and testing materials and school supplies in a comfortable, relaxed setting
- Coordinating individual and group instruction
- Helping develop instructional skills in members wishing to teach in the Clubhouse
- Providing information, catalogs and resources for area education and literacy programs, technical schools, colleges and universities.
- Providing assistance with applications, course selection, registration and financial aid resources
- Providing reviews and standardized test preparation
- Providing tutoring for members with homework, papers and test preparation
- Serving as liaison with school disability access counselors and professors to arrange for any special classroom accommodations on behalf of the member
